Go one CD at a time (for which I'd recommend your local library: increasing their circulation increases their budget allocation, so they'll buy more classical music, which helps out the symphonies and performers!) and try to associate the composer and his era with what you're listening to. I'm not sure how many are out there, but I've seen a few. Usually from smaller orchestras. I've seen it mostly from state sponsored or college orchestras that can survive from public funds and so can make their recordings freely available as a way to make classical music better known so they can draw a larger public to their concerts.
I'm at work right now so don't have access to links, but 1 do remember is my university culture downloads sites: It has around 2 or 3 dozen works for download. It's mostly really well know works, but that's basically what the OP was looking for.
