This is probably a dumb question, but I'm super new to 3d animation and Maya and need guidance! For a class assignment, I'm supposed to model from scratch or find a pre-rigged model for some animation. I found a free rigged dog model for Maya ( that will fit my story perfectly, but I want to be able to change some of the geometry of the model, like modifying the ears and tail. But I can't seem to figure out how to do that! I'm able to select parts of the dog and move it around, but I don't know how to actually change the model itself.

And if I do so, will it mess up the rigging? How do I go about editing this model? Any advice or tutorials you could point me to would help. This alteration may be more complex a task than you would hope. Basically the order that was originally followed was this - Model the dog Create the skeleton Create the controls on the skeleton Skin the dog to the skeleton There's more to it than that, but for now - if you want to change the model at this point you'd have to disable all the controls for the skeleton (Modify-Evaluate Nodes-Ignore All), then return the skeleton to the pose it was in when initially bound (Select the root of the skeleton, click on 'Skin-Go To Bind Pose') then detach the skin (Select the skin and the skeleton, pick 'Skin-Detach Skin').

From there you can change the model, then re-bind it, and re-enable the controls. You'd want to know if this were a smooth bind or a rigid bind; I'm guessing it's a smooth bind. By the nature of your question, it sounds like you're pretty new to this stuff, and this is taking your class assignment way, way in a different direction. Re-painting the weights is a pretty involved process. Not that you shouldn't try it, not that you shouldn't learn it, but if your assignment is an animation using a pre-rigged character, you're best to stick to that and use a rig that you know works.
