. Microsoft ® Excel Compilers Introduction Excel compilers are applications that convert your Microsoft ® Excel spreadsheets into executable (.exe) files with the main aim of providing formulae encryption and spreadsheet security. There are a small number of independent third party vendors offering their own Excel compilers with different proprietary technology. DataSafeXL has undertaken a thorough review/ comparison of all Microsoft Excel compilers distributed on the internet and you can purchase the full report with our findings. Findings In summary we have arrived at the following findings in our report:. 1. All Excel compilers did not perform as expected with regards to large models containing thousands of formulae and extensive use of VBA code.
In particular crashes when opening/closing and saving the compilers and even permanent loss of information were quite common. All Excel compilers have faced compatibility issues with different Microsoft Excel application versions, Windows operating systems, language environments and processor architectures (32-bit/64-bit). Use of VBA code within the compiled spreadsheets was disappointing – complex operations resulted in the compiled file to hang up or cause the Microsoft Excel application to crash. Most of the Excel compilers had their own inherent limitations such as:. Users not being able to enter new formulae in cells of the compiled spreadsheets. Inserting/deleting rows and new sheets as well as sorting data and using array formulae were prohibited. Runtime files were needed to be installed on client's machine to run and calculate the compiled spreadsheets.
Complex spreadsheets containing thousands of formulae didn't calculate properly as compiled (.exe) files. Conclusion DataSafeXL's view is that the use of Excel compilers to distribute Microsoft Excel files to external clients is prohibiting as their demerits (outlined aboved) outweigh their merits. In addition, a determined user will always be able to reverse engineer the compiled file and obtain access to the spreadsheet data. EE Pros, About 7 years ago I used a product called LockXLS that compiled an Excel Workbook into an.EXE file and provided an extensive amount of protection for distributing a WB. Most recently, I had the requirement for the same capabilities but alas my version had not only expired but was not built for Windows 7 or Windows 10. I just tried to go to their website and was unsuccessful. Here's my question. Does anyone have familiarity with LockXLS and can recommend either the updated version or another alternative software package that you can use to compile Excel?
Thank you in advance, B. My understanding, the reason you need to compile your excel files to EXE is becuase you want to protect your codes and formulas in them, while no software is 100% hack proof, I have seen even with those commerials softwares protections the exe files are decompiled. Another downside of converting excel to exe is that some antivirus software blocks it or even if t does not block it it slow its activity, another downside of exe files are that it is very difficult to transfer them either by email or cloud services, users default windows protection automatically blocks downloading exe files. Therefore, based on my personal experience, best protection software I have seen is Unviewable + it does not even change the workbook extension and most of developers use it. The vba module cannot be viewed once protected with Unviewable + software and yet the same vendor has another software called secure and that is impossible to break, one downside it has is, that it needs to be compiled in the machine where the file is going to be used, you can read about both of the referred softwares in spreadsheet1.com The above mentioned softwares are very easy to use but softwares are not free. If you are looking for something free then also depending on level of your knowledge you can use free library xll called Excel DNA This is free but requires a by of knowledge for compiling, you can google it and there is github you can download it and see the guide how you can compile your excel file with excel DNA.

I personally use Unviewable + and secure whwnecer I want to protect my excel files and great thing about them my file extensions are the same and is not exe and files can easily be shared via email.
